Can you stand the irritating noise made by your running toilet in the dead of the night? A running toilet will waste up to 200 gallons of water per day while accordingly increasing your water bill, so you have to fix the problem quickly. When you open the toilet tank, you might find that your modern toilet looks great, but it doesn’t have an important ball float. What should you do then? Don’t worry too much. Today we will show you how to fix a running toilet without a ball float.

How to Fix a Running Toilet without a Ball Float

The main difference between a modern toilet tank and a conventional toilet cistern’s flushing system is that the modern toilet tank has a toilet fill valve instead of a ball float, which technically functions the same. The fill valve is smaller in size than a ball float and it can easily fit any new compact water tank, so fixing a running toilet without a ball float is usually much easier than repairing a traditional ball float you might have used in the past.

Because the fill valve is the gadget that controls the level of water in the modern toilet, replacing the assembly is the best option for you if your fill valve doesn’t work properly. In general, you can replace the fill valve every five to six years to minimize unnecessary interruptions and ensure a smooth flushing process. See the steps to remove the existing valve and replace it with new assembly.

Step 1. Buy new fill valve assembly and prepare other needed materials

Buy a new fill valve assembly unit from any local hardware store. Remember to purchase one that includes a refill tube, gasket, lock nut and fill valve assembly. Besides, an adjustable wrench and a small container are also needed so that you can use to collect water and easily replace the fill valve. Before the replacement, do not forget to close the water supply valve first and open the lid of the toilet tank to give it a good rinse.

Step 2. Check the old fill valve

Check your old fill valve to see whether it gets worn or not. It is a good thing if its base is still available as the replacement process will be quite difficult for people. Simply pull up the lock ring to the bottom of the fill valve so that you can easily pull the fill valve up from the bottom and remove the refill tube.

Step 3. Fix a running toilet without a ball float when the old base is still available

The new fill valve has its own base, but you don’t need it as the base we used previously is still available. Just simply push your new fill valve down to the old base of the tank. Then, lock the ring behind the fill valve and connect the refill tube to the overflow pipe. You have to accordingly adjust the water level to get a proper height and prevent the toilet tank from constantly being filled with water.

Step 4. Fix a running toilet without a ball float when the old base is not available

If the base of your old fill valve does not have any suitable conditions for further use, then the entire unit must be removed and replaced accordingly. Here we will use the tools mentioned in step 1.

Ensure that your toilet tank is empty and then place a small bucket or container under the water supply hose to make the water drip into the container, because there will be more than just a few drops of water flowing down. Then unscrew the hose by using your hand to reach down the bottom of the tank and remove the lock nut properly with the help of the adjustable wrench. Now you can remove the whole old unit and directly throw it into the trash can. Install your new assembly by accordingly adjusting the height to match the height of both the tank and the overflow pipe.
