Step 1. Make sure your countertops are properly sealed
As granite countertops are made of natural stone, each individual panel is unique. Although granite is relatively nonporous, and many manufacturers will seal slabs before shipping, the sealant should also be reapplied regularly. In general, the factory sealants can be used for many years, but it all depends on the level of wear and tear.
You can contact your manufacturer or just conduct a simple water drop test to check and see if your countertop needs to be sealed. Directly drop a few drops of water on the countertops and then see if it beads up. If yes, your countertop doesn’t need to be sealed. If the water absorbs into the stone or leaves a watermark, sealing your counters is needed.
TIP : Although sealants are available in a variety of brands and types, you can spray some easy-to-use sealants on your counter, such as Granite Gold Sealer, Stone Care International Stone Spray-n-Seal, etc.
Step 2. Remove stains and water spots
Try to use a paste of baking soda and water to clean the granite stains, such as dark spots, oil stains, etc. Place the paste mixture on the stain and cover it with plastic wrap. Then let it sit for about 24 to 48 hours and it will effectively absorb the stains on the counter.
Step 3. Scrub your countertops
You can clean granite countertops by using a solution of warm water and mild dish soap that doesn’t contain any acidic ingredients, like lemon or citrus flavors or extracts. Then use a soft cloth to wipe the countertops with the solution of soap and water. Don’t forget to rinse the cloth frequently while cleaning your counters. After wiping the counters, remember to dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth so that the water doesn't stay on them for too long and form a water stain.
TIP : Granite is easy to scratch, so you must use a soft cloth or sponge, even a microfiber cloth. Do not clean your counters with an abrasive scrubber. Avoid using bleach, ammonia, rinse pads or any other harsh, abrasive or acidic cleansers on your granite countertops.
Step 4. Buff your countertops
Buff your countertops daily with a dry microfiber cloth. Or you can regularly use a granite polish, like Rock Doctor Granite Polish or Granite Gold Polish, to make your counter truly shine.
