Do you encounter any unpleasant smells when you walk into the bathroom? Do you have a slow draining sink? If yes, it is a warning sign that you should clean your bathroom sink drain. The soap, hair and other residue build up in the sink drain and make unpleasant odors and slow the sink from draining over time. If left untreated, a blocked drain can clog the entire pipe and prevent water from draining completely. So how to clean bathroom sink drain? Here are 5 methods you can try.

Method 1: Clean Bathroom Sink Drain with Boiling Water - Simplest Method

The simplest thing to clean bathroom sink drain is boil water. The normal residue that build up in the sink drain is hair, dirt and soap scum. Boiling water can break apart and go through all these to restore normal drainage flows. You’d better pour the boiling water in stages a couple of seconds apart. This will allow the boiling water work its way through all the residue.

Method 2: Wire Hanger

Wire hanger is a common item at home. It is also a quite simple but effective tool in cleaning bathroom sink. A small hook at the end of the wire hanger can be pushed over the drain cover, allowing you to remove some gunk, hair, and other potentially nasty stuff from your drain.

How to Clean Bathroom Sink Drain

Step 1: Find a wire hanger, then unwind and straighten it. Bend one end into a small hook with a plier.

Step 2: Insert the bent end of the wire into the drain, using the hook to grab hair and other residue, then pull it up and out.

Step 3: After removing as much debris as you can, be sure to pour some hot water to clear the path.

Method 3: Clean Sink Drain with Vinegar and Baking Soda

Vinegar and baking soda are natural ingredients that can clean tough residue from a bathroom sink drain.

Step 1: Pour a half gallon of boiling hot water into the sink drain. The high temperature water will help break up the debris.

Step 2: Put about 220 grams of baking soda into the drain. Leave the baking soda sit for a few minutes. The baking soda will absorb unpleasant odors and break apart the residue.

Step 3: Pour the same amount of vinegar (240 ml) into the drain after waiting a few minutes. Vinegar is also a natural deodorizer to remove the odor. The baking soda and vinegar react with each other and begin to foam. Leave the mixture in the drain for about an hour.

TIP : Cover the drain as this will encourage the baking soda and vinegar mixture to get into the blocked part of the drain and break down the remaining blockages. If you don’t have white vinegar, you can use cider vinegar or lemon juice instead.

Step 4: Rinse again the sink drain with boiling water. You can repeat the process to clean the sink drain thoroughly.

Method 4: Wet and Dry Vacuum

A wet and dry vacuum is also an effective way to clean the bathroom sink drain.  Be sure to set it to liquid first and cover its vent to avoid causing a mess. Cover the drain with a tight seal to allow the vacuum to exert the maximum sucking action. Turn the vacuum at its highest setting to remove all the nasty dirt that clogs the drain pipes.

Method 5: Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium Hydroxide is also known as caustic soda. You can use it to clean the bathroom sink drain, but you need to protect yourself when working with this because it can burn your skin. This means using rubber gloves and proper eye protection. You need to use cold water to mix the caustic soda instead of hot water. The mixture will generate heat. So when you leave it in the drain for about 30 minutes, it will cut off all the blockages. Rinse with boiling water and repeat the process if normal flow is not restored.
